Agenda 10/27/2021

33 Parks, 24 Baseball Fields, 50 Basketball Courts

The Park Services Division is responsible for the maintenance of all city parks, as well as the Civic Center Complex and Sea Aire Golf Course. The division maintains all trees, turf, barbecues, benches, game courts, and athletic fields, and is primarily responsible for the rehabilitation of all parks. Other duties include the monitoring and repair of playground equipment, park building and restroom maintenance, and the monitoring and repair of park irrigation systems. Included within the division are certified play equipment inspectors.

As the Manager and Naturalist at Madrona, I tried on a daily basis to move Staff, volunteers and the Preserve towards potential. With this philosophy as an organization we were able to move steadily forward and accomplish many goals related to restoration, programming, education, and leadership training. I carry this same philosophy into the Park Services Manager position and look forward to achieving specific goals we are setting for each park.

Through her civic involvement and leadership, Katy Geissert made significant contributions to the growth and development of the community. In the late 1960s, she led a grassroots campaign for the passage of a bond issue that established the Torrance Library System, which is comprised of six branches. The bond passed in 1967, and the Torrance Katy Geissert Civic Center Library was dedicated in April 1971.

In her 20 years as an elected official, Katy Geissert had the distinction of being the first woman elected to the Torrance City Council in 1974 and the first woman to become mayor of Torrance in 1986. Katy Geissert's continued dedication and commitment to the enrichment of the individual have greatly enhanced the quality of life in Torrance.
